What just happened?

I turned off my modem on my MAC G5 and went shopping. When I came back, I turned on the modem and went to the kitchen. When I got back to my computer 5 minutes later, it was off. It isn't set to turn off. I started it up and noticed my AS gad a green light and an amber light. I clicked mail and it said I needed to import my mail. I did. I could not connect to any site or get mail so I unplugged the AS and ran my modem straight in. I got mail and connected.
I should add, Verizon switched over to Frontier today.
My AS seems to have no function any more. What just happened?
